Szederkény ENG

Szederkény is a village with a population of 1,800 located in the heart of Baranya County. Our small village is situated along Highway 57 between Pécs and Mohács, nestled in a valley on both sides of the Karasica stream.

It is likely that the settlement was established in the mid-13th century, after the Mongol invasion. The first written records mention the village as Zederkyn and Namya. These two settlements merged under the name Szederkény in 1948.

The settlement's German colonization began in 1720, with settlers coming from Fulda in the Hessen region of Germany. There was a significant demographic change during this period. After World War II, many local Germans were deported, and their places were taken by Hungarians resettled from Upper Hungary. Throughout history, the composition of the population has undergone significant changes, resulting in a community that today includes not only Hungarians but also Swabian and Croatian minorities.

Economically, Szederkény plays a significant role in the region and increasingly serves as a micro-center within the Bóly district. In recent years, the village has seen substantial infrastructural development. ODW Elektrik Magyarország Kft., a subsidiary of a German automotive supplier, is the largest employer in the village with nearly 500 employees. Additionally, several notable businesses contribute indirectly to the village’s development. Here, you can find all the services and institutions necessary for a high quality of life, and visitors will experience a village with European-level amenities.

Szederkény is renowned for its excellent wines, with grape cultivation taking place on nearly 60 hectares. Fortunately, the village's natural conditions, particularly its soil and climate, provide outstanding conditions for this. The main varieties grown in the area include Cserszegi fűszeres, Chardonnay, Olaszrizling, and Juhfark. The two historic wine cellars contain approximately 220 cellars in total, where vintners warmly welcome visitors.

From a transportation perspective, Szederkény benefits from its proximity to the M6 motorway, making access very convenient. The nearby cities' cultural facilities and schools are easily accessible by bus or car, with frequent bus services facilitating travel.

In our German ethnic institutions (crèche, kindergarten, school), child-centered pedagogy and high-quality education are provided. The vibrant cultural, recreational, and sports life is maintained by our active local communities. Szederkény is characterized by its dedicated, hardworking residents who take pride in their village and continuously maintain their environment.

Overall, Szederkény is a diverse, developing, peaceful, yet exciting, and above all, highly livable settlement. We warmly welcome anyone who identifies with our motto:

Szederkény… Wine, Friends, Sunshine
